University of the Underground at Gleason's Gym

Founded in February 2017, the University of the Underground is a free, pluralistic and transnational university based in the basement of nightclubs – with headquarters in Amsterdam and London – and actively working with both institutions and nightlife. Their aim is to bring generations together to democratise access to public institutions and trigger changes and critical reflections through the use of creative and experiential practices.


This summer, the University of the Underground took to New York for a month-long summer program. To conclude their time in the city and raise money for the charity, director Dr Nelly Ben Hayoun took on her first fight at the legendary boxing club Gleason’s Gym in New York, which has been the home to 136 world champions and oldest boxing gym in USA.
